MUMBAI: Amid a Covid-19 surge, Maharashtra home minister Anil Deshmukh has warned people disseminating false information of “stringent actions”.
“The @MahaCyber1 Branch is keeping a close eye on those who are spreading false rumours that lockdown has been reimposed in Maharashtra. Stringent action has been directed against the people concerned for attempting to disseminate false information without any official information,” Deshmukh tweeted.

His comments come amid rumours on social media that the police are fining people Rs 1,000 for not wearing masks.

There are also rumours that another lockdown may be imposed in Maharashtra due to the spread of Covid-19.

Mumbai police commissioner Param Bir Singh tweeted on Tuesday, “Dear Mumbaikars! #FakeNews mongers are back again! This time claiming that No Mask can cost you a fine of 1000 rupees. While no money can compensate for safety being compromised, you can only be charged Rupees 200 for not wearing a mask. #MaskisMust #FakeNewsAlert”.

During the last three days, Mumbai Police has imposed a fine on 17,528.
